IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS)

The IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures stands as a premier event organized by the IAHR Committee on Hydraulic Structures, serving as a global platform that brings together researchers, engineers, and practitioners specializing in the design and innovation of hydraulic structures. Since its inception in 2004, this biennial symposium has successfully convened across five continents, fostering the exchange of cutting-edge fundamental and applied research, dissemination of groundbreaking engineering practices, and forward-looking dialogues on emerging challenges and future directions. Over its two-decade legacy, the symposium has not only catalyzed technological advancements but also mirrored the dynamic evolution of hydraulic engineering, while charting the remarkable growth of the technical community.

The 11th IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS2026) will convene in Chengdu, China from 29 June to 1 July, 2026, hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering at Sichuan University, . The symposium features a two-day technical program (29-30 June) at Wangjiang Hotel, including four keynote lectures and two parallel sessions of peer-reviewed presentations, and a one-day technical tour (1 July) that offers two options to 1) the UNESCO World Heritage Site Dujiangyan Irrigation System, alongside the Wenchuan Earthquake Memorial and the Zipingpu Dam nearby, and 2) the UNESCO World Heritage Site Leshan Giant Buddha, alongside the newly constructed navigation hub and barrage complex. An extended post-event tour with limited participation number will be offered to visit two major dams on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the Xiluodu Hydropower Station and the Xiangjiaba Hydropower Station, on 3-4 July, 2026, after the IJREWHS2026.

IAHR International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures (IJREWHS)

Paper submission and oral presentation

Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award

The IAHR International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures (IJREWHS) has been organized by the IAHR Committee on Hydraulic Structures since 2006 with the aim of bringing together young scientists and engineers to discuss hydraulic structure designs, emerging research and practical solutions. The 10th IJREWHS will be a one-day event taking placing on 2 July, 2026, following the 11th IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures (ISHS2026), hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics and Mountain River Engineering at Sichuan University. Young researchers and professionals are encouraged to participate to receive comprehensive feedback on their presentation (over extended discussion time slots compared to the symposium) from senior mentors arranged by the technical and organizing committees, and to develop networks with peer researchers and engineers.

Abstract submission will be open from 1 August 2025. Authors will be asked to select between ISHS2026 and IJREWHS2026 for their submission, and the authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to submit full papers of 6-10 pages that undergo peer-review by the International Scientific Committee for the two events, respectively. Only accepted full papers will be eligible for oral presentation opportunities on the corresponding events and inclusion in the official proceedings. Both abstract and full paper must be prepared using the official templates. Please download the templates and find further instruction on the Template Download page.

The Philip H. Burgi Best Paper Award recognizes the most outstanding technical paper presented at both ISHS and IJREWHS. The Award was launched in 2018 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the IAHR Technical Committee on Hydraulic Structures. Named after the first chair of the Technical Committee, Philip H. Burgi, the Award was delivered for the first time at ISHS2018 in Aachen, Germany.

All accepted full papers submitted to ISHS2026 and IJREWHS2026 will automatically be considered for the Award, unless authors opt out during submission. An independent judging panel will shortlist papers, which will be presented in a dedicated session at ISHS2026. Final selection will consider both paper quality and presentation performance. The winner will be announced during the ISHS2026 closing ceremony. Papers shortlisted from IJREWHS2026 submission will retain their presentation opportunity at the junior workshop.
