11th IAHR International Symposium on Hydraulic Structures  ·  ISHS2026
& 10th IAHR International Junior Researcher and Engineer Workshop on Hydraulic Structures · IJREWHS2026

The Host City

Nestled in China's fertile Sichuan Basin, Chengdu stands as both a cradle of ancient hydraulic wisdom and a modern hub for water infrastructure innovation. This 2,300-year-old metropolis, recognized by UNESCO as a City of Gastronomy, harmoniously blends rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge development. While renowned for its giant panda sanctuaries, fiery Sichuan cuisine, and leisurely teahouse culture, Chengdu's true engineering marvel lies in its historic and ongoing relationship with water management.

The city's hydraulic legacy begins with the Dujiangyan Irrigation System, a 2,250-year-old engineering masterpiece that transformed the region. Designed by Li Bing during the Qin Dynasty, this gravity-driven water diversion project - older than the Roman aqueducts - continues to irrigate over 5,300 km² of farmland through its ingenious fish-mouth levee, flying sand weir, and bottle-neck channel system. Unlike contemporary dams, Dujiangyan's ecological design ensures sediment flushing and flood control while maintaining aquatic ecosystems, offering enduring lessons in sustainable water governance.

Modern Chengdu plays a pivotal role in China's cascade hydropower development along the Upper Yangtze River system. Located at the gateway to the Tibetan Plateau's "Water Tower of Asia," the city serves as the operational and research base for numerous mega-projects. Nearby installations like the Zipingpu Multipurpose Dam demonstrate advanced technologies in seismic-resistant design and sediment management, crucial for stabilizing water supply to Chengdu's 20 million residents.

The city's strategic position along the Min and Tuo Rivers has fostered cutting-edge research in flood-risk mitigation and trans-basin water transfer systems. Local universities collaborate closely with institutions like the Yangtze River Scientific Research Institute on sediment transport modeling and eco-hydraulic engineering solutions. Recent innovations include AI-powered flood prediction systems and fish-friendly turbine designs being tested in nearby hydropower stations.

Beyond engineering, Chengdu offers unique professional insights through its Water Conservancy Culture Museum and regular academic exchanges at Sichuan University's State Key Laboratory of Hydraulics. The city's modern conference facilities, served by an expanding metro network and dual international airports, provide convenient access to both engineering landmarks and cultural attractions - from the mystical Sanxingdui Bronze Age relics to the vibrant Jinjiang River waterfront redevelopment.

For hydraulic professionals, Chengdu presents a living laboratory where ancient water wisdom dialogues with 21st-century innovation, making it an inspiring host city for international symposiums on water infrastructure challenges and sustainable solutions.
